Why Bullet Journaling?

Some of you might wonder what is bullet journaling and why am I doing it… It’s pretty simple in brief words: it’s a special kind of way to take notes in a journal. You can do it with every journal and you can start at any time you want.

The system itself was invented by Ryder Carroll. He wrote a book about The Bullet Journal Method – a bestseller still available in different stores, in different languages and even as audiobook. A lot of people adopted to this system and I got in touch with it via YouTube, where a lot of them showed how they were taking their notes.

One of the most important things to set up: the key.

I ordered my first bullet journal just shortly before the Covid-19-pandemic hitted us. It was a bad time to start – and the best time to start.

The most important thing I wanted to set up in my journal was a tracker. I wanted to keep track of the food I’m eating and quit some bad habits, like drinking to much hot chocolate and coke. The first spread was pretty simple, almost like any other calendar or planner you can buy out there. A simple horizontal layout with a ton of space for appointments and to-do-lists.

The first lock-down happened, and suddenly I had no appointments anymore. Thanks to the free system of the Bullet Journal I could quickly adopt to the new situation. I changed from a weekly planner-like set-up to a diary like journal kind of style to put in my thoughts and keep track of the pandemic and our situation.

After some time I started to develop a creative approach to my journal. Inspired by a lot of videos I watched and a lot of postings I saw on instagram I found back to art, especially watercolors.

So what about now, where am I standing and where did I evolve to?

I’m still finding my way I’d sum it up. Every month looks different in my journal and the focus switches from month to month as well. Sometimes I need more space to write my thoughts, sometimes I need more space for to-do-lists or creative expressions.

My bullet journal is my planner, my to-do-list collection, my notebook, my meeting transcripts, my journal, my sketch book and a piece of art. Its one book for everything! It helped my staying present, staying focused and relaxing when times are stressful. I can’t wait to show it to you – and perhaps inspire someone to start a journal as well!
